Tikal is one of the many Mayan City-States located in Guatemala, in the Peten. It is the most extensively excavated of the ancient Mayan cities but apparently not the largest (Belizeans say the largest ancient Mayan city found so far is Caracol, about 4 km from the border with Guatemala). This is the view from the top of what archeologist decided to call temple IV, the tallest structure at about 70 mts or 230 feet. From left to right: temples I (or temple of the Great Jaguar), II (or Moon temple), and V.
